ABSTRACT

The second chapter covers how foodstuffs are procured for a household from various sources including growing crops; bee-keeping; herding camels, cows and goats; fishing and diving. It starts with an overview of the geography of the Dhofar region and how different foodstuffs are grown, caught and eaten at different times in the year. The chapter next describes farming and “plantations” to show how crops are planted, grown, harvested and distributed. Herded animals (goats, cows and camels) are then considered in terms of caring for, milking, buying, selling and slaughtering. The seasons of fishing (what is caught when and how) are clarified. There is a short section on wild animals, including gazelles, wolves, hyenas, and birds, and how these fit into the food chain. This is followed by an explanation of how foodstuffs and prepared food are shared among friends, relatives and neighbors both in daily life and during celebration events. Lastly, the various ways of purchasing food in Dhofar are explained.
