ABSTRACT

Chapter 5 gives an overview of the specific actions and formalities of eating, including descriptions of who is policing and who is policed while eating. The chapter looks at foodways outside of the home, with an overview of restaurants and cafés in Dhofar, including what is typically served in different types of restaurants and who works in these locations. Then family and single-gender picnics are examined in terms of what is eaten and where. The chapter ends with an analysis of why picnics are the favorite type of meal in Dhofar.
