ABSTRACT

Chapter 6 looks in detail at three aspects of foodways: differences in what people eat and how, depending on age, who has what type of power over foodways and how gender is and is not connected to foodways. First the foodways of lifestages is considered, including what pregnant women, newborns, infants, children, and the aged typically eat. What is eaten when a person is sick is also considered. How power is connected to foodways is examined by asking why, and in what ways, do people have power over what another person does or does not eat. Lastly, differences in patterns of cooking, consumption and photographing food between men and women is investigated.
