ABSTRACT

The last chapter reviews changes in foodways over the past few decades. There are sections on the differences in cooking methods, help with food-related chores, selection of food choices in stores and restaurants, and food presentation. Also, the increased awareness of the importance of nutrition has meant that more people are aware of food-related diseases (such as diabetes) and the importance of receiving adequate daily vitamins. Lastly, two issues of monetizing food are discussed: the arrival of “pay-to-diet” companies and women using social media to create small home-catering businesses. Government initiatives to help women create small businesses and the increased use of social media mean that Dhofari women are able to sell a variety of foodstuffs (such as mussels they have collected) and prepared food such as traditional bread, appetizers (such as stuffed grape leaves), cakes, and platters of rice and meat.
