ABSTRACT

In this chapter, some victims reported their employers to be a significant help by understanding and offering flexibility. Victims appreciated their employers providing flexibility, especially when victims needed to take time off to attend court hearings or other appointments. Employers who have companies that offer EAP (Employee Assistance Programming) and who were suggested to the victim as a resource were helpful. EAPs benefitted victims with free counseling services (facilitated by Human Resources) from their company. Employers that reprimanded victims for missing work without regard or concern for their personal situation were deemed as uncaring and lacking compassion. This chapter illustrates how companies, employers and coworkers should be concerned and invested in the well-being of their employees. Examples of this include HR workshops, training and seminars regarding domestic abuse. It is important for companies to ensure that their work environments are safe places and that anyone on the premises (unsolicited) will be escorted off. Well-structured EAPs and organizational safety plans are the cornerstone of this recommendation.
