ABSTRACT

This chapter demonstrates the importance of the empowerment model and theory, when formal and/or informal supports work with victims of domestic abuse. Teaching self-efficacy and the act of rebuilding the victim’s self-esteem, self-confidence, self-worth and independent decision-making are key components of this chapter. This chapter describes how personal (individual), interpersonal (relational) and social/community (collective community and society) can assist service providers to implement the reduction of oppression and victimization from victims’ lives. The purpose of such an imperative treatment model is for formal supports to provide a productive therapeutic atmosphere and to help victims identify the most helpful services. In addition, this treatment model strives to empower victims during their multiple attempts to reduce or escape abuse in their homes. Teaching the empowerment model and theory to victims will increase the victims’ self-efficacy, so their voices have the ability and courage to pursue and accomplish their dreams and goals in reality.
