ABSTRACT

Among all southern Nigerian peoples, staffs in virtually all media that serve many different purposes can be observed. Some have even been attributed to the Lower Niger Bronzes, such as the graceful antelope staff head held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Presumably cast-metal staffs replaced wooden staffs. Elders of the Isoko town of Uzere all have cherished wooden staffs with elaborately carved finials that they display at annual celebrations. The total height of the staff is unknown because all scepter heads are broken off from their iron staffs due to rust. Lorenz does not provide clarification of either the “triple loop,” which may refer to our “Aro Knot” image, or their location on which bells.
