ABSTRACT

Questioning is an art. The ability to check for understanding, stretch learning and provide students with the opportunity for deeper level thinking is something that a lot of early career teachers struggle with. This chapter highlights effective and efficient ways to vary questioning to ensure that you are using the right questions at the right time. Moreover, the chapter encourages teachers to consider how they select and distribute their questioning to ensure that they are getting the most from the effort they are putting in. The aim of this chapter is to get teachers thinking about how they can use questioning in a more focused way to ensure that the answers they get from students aid learning.
