ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the different kinds of disadvantage that you may come across and outlines the challenges that children from disadvantaged backgrounds face. It considers the impact that disadvantage has on child development and learning, drawn from research. It explains why the attainment gap is evident so early on and explores why developing strong relationships with the whole family is key to closing the gap. It goes on to consider how developing cultural capital can be an effective approach to providing interesting opportunities for children to develop their knowledge and skills and how to make the best use of your Early Years Pupil Premium.
