ABSTRACT
This chapter looks at the history and culture of early years education in England. It examines why there is often confusion around the core purpose of early education and why it is not always valued as highly as it should be. By understanding the culture and the pedagogy of play it can offer an insight into your practice considering the kind of provision children need to grow and thrive so they get the best possible start to their education journey.
