ABSTRACT
This chapter looks at the importance of learning to read as the gateway to learning and examines how some children can be further disadvantaged by the way in which this often happens in our current system. With the school starting age in England being amongst the youngest in the world, it is important to ensure that the needs of young children are not overlooked in an education system that is moving earlier and earlier towards an increasingly formalised curriculum.
