ABSTRACT

For a young child life is about change; they are constantly learning new things, meeting new people and going to new places. Most children take these changes in their stride and are supported to gradually expand their world by warm responsive adults that they can depend on. This builds resilience and is part of the preparation for a life that will be full of change and challenge. However, where the change is sudden, unexpected, or badly managed it can cause a child to feel anxious and can lead to mistrust of adults and leave them unable to manage change well. This chapter explores how to manage transitions in the early years so children feel confident to undertake their next steps in learning.
