ABSTRACT

From the outset, total excavation was proposed in Area A, an area which contained a complex of very well preserved earthworks that appeared to represent the northernmost of the farmstead plots. Other features were to be dated and characterised by means of less extensive evaluation trenching. Each discrete area of investigation was designated by a letter in the order in which they were investigated. Areas A, B, G and H each consisted of open area excavations; Areas C, D, E, F, I, J and K represented evaluation trenches that were opened by machine and further investigated and recorded by hand. A standard context-based recording system was used throughout the excavation work, pretty much as set out in the Central Excavation Unit recording manual. All non-metal finds were subsequently washed and marked with the site code and catalogued by context and material type. Charred plant remains were recovered from bulk soil samples by wet sieving through a 500 micron mesh.
