ABSTRACT

All cities, as in the Prologue, have a design, a morphology that evolves piece by piece with some of the pieces—major infrastructure projects and urban designs—being larger than others, such as individual buildings, street furniture, and flower boxes. The implication is that urban designers need to be more aware of the problems and issues confronting society. Many issues relating to the natural environment fall outside the realm of abilities of urban designers to address when they are considering which requirements to focus on when designing specific projects. Urban designs in many locations will need to respond to the effects of global warming and the concomitant rise in sea levels. The solution is multipronged: continuing the development of low-rise, high-density, but mixed-use residential neighborhoods on urban brownfield sites, clustering housing in inner-city neighborhoods, and decentralizing employment opportunities.
