ABSTRACT

Although we may think of all coaching as deeply appreciative, some approaches focus on the appreciation of the client work as a foundational to the coaching process. Appreciative coaching, as a stream of positive-constructivist psychology, invites us to explore strengths and existing resources of the coachee. An important aspect of this approach is attention to the transformational power of appreciative language. This chapter introduces key principles, operating models and techniques of appreciative coaching. The 4D Model and Reflected Best Self Technique are elaborated as useful resources that can be put to coaching practice. An illustrative case example of appreciative coaching is provided.
