ABSTRACT

The chapter examines the first-time hybrid documentaries of filmmakers Payal Kapadia and Kirsten Johnson. While neither filmmaker is new to documentary, their deeply personal hybrid film debuts, A Night of Knowing Nothing and Dick Johnson Is Dead had a powerful impact on audiences around the world. Their ability to map how each of the films developed and how the hybrid form was intrinsically wedded to the narrative offer invaluable insight into the creation of new visions in documentary.
