ABSTRACT

This closing chapter summarises the key arguments made throughout the text and weaves them together into the conclusion that Bourdieu’s work provides a path forward in explaining how dominant conceptual ‘sites’ of home can be manipulated and shifted to suit specific regeneration goals. Regeneration of the city morphed from the physical and peripheral – ‘slum’ clearance, house building, and road restructuring in the districts – to the reputational and central; prioritisation of the waterfront and the city centre as giving Liverpool its best chance of establishing a positive international image. Earlier discussion on the Bourdieusian concepts of habitus and field is consolidated into a clear, ‘spelled out’ conclusion which demonstrates the use of these concepts in explaining and understanding of public acceptance of regeneration initiatives which prioritise the city centre over the districts. The Lego Movie is offered as a helpful analogy for the contemporary regenerating city, and implicit expectations placed upon the city’s inhabitants.
