ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses strategies for designing a thematic unit’s content and language integrated architecture, to supplement the unit’s content nucleus. There are three main sections. In the first section, approaches to conducting an analysis of the unit’s linguistic features are explored, focusing on four principal sources: summative performance tasks, authentic texts in the target language, previous thematic units, and students. In the second section, ways of articulating knowledge and skills goals that integrate language and content are discussed, based on prior content research and language analysis. Finally, in the third section, content and language integrated strategies for developing robust assessment plans are presented, with an emphasis on rubric design and formative assessment.
