ABSTRACT

Focusing on Cuba as a dynamic site of translation activity, this chapter centers on periodical activity in Havana with an emphasis on Revista Casa de las Américas. Given its centrality in the context of Latin America and the Caribbean, the institution Casa de las Américas and its publications, especially the magazine, have been exemplary of translation practice. Casa is thus a Latin American space of translation par excellence. Among other aspects, the chapter discusses the relationship between Revista Casa and two of its (pre-59) precursors, Orígenes and Ciclón, to illustrate continuities and discontinuities of translation and narrative practice as they relate to the Cuban and Latin American political and cultural fields.
