ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the meaning of management in an organisational context. It provides a model of management (including planning, organising, staffing, directing and controlling) and explains how each stage of the model takes place. In particular, the chapter assesses management in the African context. It defines what we mean by management and provides a brief history of management thinking, and then outlines aspects of the African context that may affect the reality of the practice of management. Each component of the model is considered in more detail in terms of the African context.
