ABSTRACT
This chapter presents an overview of the context in which this book is anchored. The first section of this chapter will outline the importance of sustainable development in the global agenda and the contribution of the private sector towards achieving this. Within this context, sustainability assessments are identified as a key process in enabling the private sector to address sustainable development in a systematic way. The next section will explore the unique country context that underpins this research, looking specifically at the Philippines. Following this, the significance of this research will be presented, including the two major research questions directing the research undertaken. Following this, the research approach will be briefly examined before concluding with an overview of the chapters in this book.
