ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an opportunity to explore what wisdom is and what wisdom is not. “Wise” is free of discrimination or prejudice. The title of “wise” is given with context and observation of a person’s characteristics, actions, and behavior as through the eyes of people around them. There are many different theories, models, frameworks, and processes in the relatively young field of wisdom science, yet there are few solid and undisputed answers. What else can we expect from a term that is so hard to simply define? The ability to make wise decisions is unquestionably a signal that a person has attributes of a wise person, but wise decisions don’t necessarily create a wise person. Wisdom has characteristics, traits, and behavioral profiles that can be observed and measured within the growing field of wisdom science. Wisdom is a pinnacle state of human development and a uniquely human quality.
