ABSTRACT

Wire sizing has been so complicated that many experts disagree on how to correctly size a wire and many books have conflicting methods for how to do it properly. This is also why there are no wire sizing programs on the internet that work for anything besides voltage drop. Wire sizing for voltage drop is a good idea, but it is never a Code issue with the National Electrical Code. In sizing a wire there are many different checks that should be done. Some of the checks seem so obvious that they are usually skipped, while others are sometimes just given a brief statement such as “then check that the overcurrent device satisfies Article 240 Overcurrent Protection.”.
