ABSTRACT

The connection between the photovoltaic (PV) electric supply station and the utility shall be made through a medium voltage or high voltage method, such as the following: switchgear, substation, switchyard and similar method. The only loads allowed in a PV electric supply station are those to power the auxiliary equipment used in the process of generating power. Documentation that construction of the project followed the electrical engineered design shall be made available to the AHJ upon request. When installing a large-scale PV system in the past, PV companies were often forced to pretend that they were a utility. Using Article 690 for compliance with a 100MW power plant was never the intended use of the article. Utilities may build and operate PV systems that are not required to be compliant with the National Electrical Code; however, it is Code compliant to build a large PV system that does not comply 100% with Article 690.
