ABSTRACT

The introduction outlines the need and purpose for this book. Namely, the author reflects on his own motivations to engage in the research project that the text centers on, highlighting the lack of theorizing concerning the intersections of race and sexuality in higher education and student affairs. He also shares his own story as a Queer Student of Color who has attended several academic institutions, interweaving a personal narrative to outline his motivations for the research. Following this, the author describes the need to examine historically white institutions respective to Queer Students of Color and their identities. He also details how the study he conducted served as a vital intervention into the existing research on college student identity. Namely, he underscores the need for research that foregrounds the role of systems of power in shaping the lives of college students from minoritized backgrounds. The chapter concludes with a structure for the text, articulating the format of the following sections and how participants’ narratives will guide the arguments found in the book.
