ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a broad overview of the scholarly literature that serves as a foundation for this text. The author begins by highlighting the rise of research on Queer People of Color in higher education in recent years. He then explores this body of scholarship by looking at four main areas that exist: how Queer People of Color experience oppression at historically white institutions, the lack of representation and institutional resources for these individuals on college campuses, how they form support networks in collegiate environments, and the within-group differences that exist in Queer Communities of Color. In surveying these themes, the author concludes with details of the study at the heart of this book and introduces information about the twenty participants whose stories are highlighted in the text. The author describes that though research now exists about the experiences of Queer Collegians of Color, limited scholarship examines notions of identity and identity exploration for those at the intersections of multiple marginalized identities.
