ABSTRACT

Appreciation of diversity is essential for effective strategic communication. Many organizations aggressively seek employees from groups that sometimes are underrepresented in the workforce, including: Women, Members of racial and ethnic minorities, Physically and mentally challenged individuals, Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals and Older workers. Diversity in strategic communication staffs is more than a moral policy or compliance with regulations; it’s a good business decision. As international strategic communication becomes a daily reality, the danger of cross-cultural blunders increases. To address a large group, strategic writers often must focus on the values of the majority. Strategic writers should avoid stereotyping members of the target audience. The array of terms for ethnic and racial groups can present challenges for strategic writers. Diversity is an asset for the people organization and its communications. Be aware of its value in their quest to be a successful strategic writer.
