ABSTRACT

Heterogeneity of the secessionist regions might be measured using the three crucial romantic factors – religion, language, and ethnicity – as they can be easily quantified. Heterogeneity in the romantic factors materialises in the political preferences of the inhabitants. Macroeconomic factors cover the economic level and economic performance of region, role of scarce resources, impact of fiscal position in terms of the fiscal decentralisation, and the economic integration. Higher support for fiscal decentralisation can be observed among people who are dissatisfied with the economic situation in their country. The economic level of Catalonia, Basque, and Flanders of South Tyrol is pronouncedly higher in comparison to the rest of the countries. The economic level is also an important factor when they decide on the secession votes: the higher the economic level, the greater the support of independence in the referendum would be.
