ABSTRACT

The Flemish region is, together with Scotland and Catalonia, considered to be one of the crucial secessionist regions in modern Europe. While Flanders belongs to typical secessionist regions playing with the idea of full independence, South Tyroleans consider irredentism, which leads to unification with Austria based on historical development. The main autonomist force, N-VA, is growing and reaching greater election success since it gradually replaced the then-leader of the secessionist wing, Flemish Block. Pro-secessionist party members in Flanders reached a higher education level than respondents from other regions; 57% of Flemish respondents are university graduates, and all of them are white-collar workers. The Flemish read the national press more often than the regional press. This difference is also statistically significant in comparison to readers from other secessionist regions in Europe, as they are much more interested in the regional media.
