ABSTRACT

Chapter 1 addresses how the body and emotion do and should influence how scholars practise ethical research. The chapter opens with an autoethnographic account of how Brit developed their own heuristic for sustainable and ethical research methods, which they refer to as goodwill ethics. This goodwill ethics is based in large part in the fan communities Brit has both engaged with and studied, where fans ultimately strive to support and protect each other. This chapter uses affect theory in addition to Whiteman’s theory of ethics as a process to frame the ongoing journey of developing ethical research methods. Ultimately, it is argued that goodwill ethics are best represented through the values of respect, reciprocity, transparency, and vulnerability.
