ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book introduces the framework for scaffolding learning that structures the book, and which is central to the aim of developing independent learners. It discusses the key theories which are the foundations for the framework for scaffolding learning. The book also discusses the theory of scaffolding in more detail and how teaching assistants (TAs) need to interact with pupils during a task in order to maximise their learning experience. It provides more detail on each level of the scaffolding framework in turn, giving examples of specific interactive strategies that TAs can use to develop pupils’ independent learning. The book considers how TAs can support the teacher’s job of assessment. It looks at how teachers and TAs can work together to ensure that the teacher can accurately assess the development of each pupil and plan for their future learning needs.
