ABSTRACT

This chapter covers the idea of process success criteria, which are key for identifying the things one might need to scaffold. ‘Scaffolding’ is a term which is regularly used in educational discussions and in books, but is not often explained by those who use it. It gets used in different ways by different people, so as a result its meaning can lose clarity. Accepting that pupil responsibility is the basis for effective scaffolding, we can now add another important ingredient. ‘Contingency’ is the act of responding moment-by-moment to what the pupil has just done or said. Process success criteria take the overall task goal (the product) and split it into the different steps needed to achieve that goal. Process success criteria are all the steps or elements required in order to complete the task successfully.
