ABSTRACT

Silent movies were quickly phased out after the unprecedented success of the first ‘talkie’, The Jazz Singer. By the late 1930s, Technicolor movies would slowly supplant black-and-white films, and in the 1960s, movies in full color would become the norm. An argument could be made that the studio system of today is not all that different from in the past. The major studios, after all, continue to finance, market, and distribute feature films that are intended – in their first run – to be viewed in a theater. Studios had done some realigning of their own, revamping their business model to be more economically efficient, buying and developing fewer original and speculative scripts, and relying even more on previously existing properties such as remakes, sequels, novels, and comic books. As for careers in the entertainment industry, there are the exceptional few who become the big stars, directors, producers, and writers.
