ABSTRACT

Chapter 2 introduces the migrant maternal Facebook groups, which are this study’s research sites. The groups are described and placed in the broader context and history of parents’ groups in Australia. Their origin stories are explained in relation to the personal mothering and migration stories of the women who created them, and in the context of the rising popularity of Facebook groups. Finally, the chapter outlines the main activities undertaken in the groups, focusing on the exchange of information and the ways in which this exchange is part of a social strategy undertaken by women in an attempt to navigate their lives as migrant mothers in Australia. This chapter also introduces the reader to the migrant mothers who create and participate in these groups.
