ABSTRACT

The MArch demands a fuller understanding of building tectonics. Student will typically be reaching a level where they can be more critical and strategic about what they find interesting in history, theory and futures, and how they can link contrasting ideas intellectually and architecturally. It’s valuable to speak to student tutors and be aware of exactly what they are being asked to do and the level at which they are being asked to do it. Students will be asked to develop a full understanding of the site in terms of its actual materiality and its history, as well as its urban/rural/suburban configuration in its wider context. The RIBA Plan of Work and its supporting documentation is an important schedule of the architect’s work stages. In preparing for real-life work as an architect, it’s also necessary to understand critical paths and risk registers.
