ABSTRACT

In an interview, the conduct described is that of the interviewer who enthusiastically asks the first question without first allowing the interviewee to become accustomed to the situation. Interviewing is a collaborative activity, an exercise that the interviewer and the interviewee jointly perform. In introducing interviews, interviewers describe how interviews are to be conducted. As a consequence, the information provided in the pre-introduction will tend to be far less detailed than the information provided in the introduction phase of the interview itself. Its only function is to enable the prospective interviewee to agree to participate in the proposed interview. After some generally informative remarks about the interview, the interviewer need simply ask whether the prospective interviewee is willing to participate. An important element of the physical setting involves the manner in which the interviewer and the interviewee are seated during the interview.
