ABSTRACT

This chapter describes how to modify or combine data. In SPSS, the reversal of sequence of the order of values is executed by means of a recoding procedure. The order of the values is derived from the negatively formulated items. The chapter explains the procedure by which one can save the recoded data. The values of the entered data can be processed in various ways. Sometimes, as in the case of age, it is useful to construct classes or categories. The chapter explains how one can use SPSS to perform such a classification. SPSS can also be used to combine data; for instance, one can calculate a total score for happiness. In performing such an operation, it is certainly important to take missing data into account.
