ABSTRACT

Ethnography or field study, collectively known as field research, represents a meta-method that is developed specifically for learning about or understanding the members of a community in their physical setting (i.e., field) through their actions, behaviors, exchanges, interactions, and other activities. This chapter examines the features of field research which include the use of multiple methods (i.e., meta-method), immersion in the field and going native, research in context, evolving data collection plan, and research on a relatively small scale. Steps in conducting field research are depicted. Selections of multiple techniques for data collection, membership roles, and other considerations in field research are also made. This chapter concludes with dos and don'ts in field research along with two case studies, one being ethnography research while the other reporting a field study.
