ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on interview as a data collection technique by which the researcher asks each participant questions relating to a research problem. It describes and discusses interview question types (i.e., main, probe, and follow-up), how to develop each kind of questions, as well as dos and don'ts for formulating interview questions. Each interview type (i.e., structured interviews, semi-structured interviews, and unstructured interviews) is explained and contrasted. Other topics presented in this chapter contain the interview guide – an important tool for conducting interview research, interview approaches, interview procedures and techniques. Dos and don'ts for conducting interview research are also recapitulated. Two case studies conclude this chapter with one on interview guide development and the other on using interview as a data collection technique in research.
