ABSTRACT

Observation is a method for gathering data via carefully and attentively watching and systematically making notes on what is being studied. This chapter presents and discusses types of observation along with their features by applying three categorization criteria: degree of involvement, structured or not, and obtrusive or not. Other topics examined in this chapter include observation preparation, development of an observation guide, what to observe, how to observe, and dos and don'ts in observation research. Two case studies are made in this chapter, with one on using participant observation and the other adopting structured observation for data collection.
