ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the production models and indicates the mutual differences. The most attractive form of production is where there is no build-up of stock. In fact, this means that the material continually flows through the company. The assembly line is also a form of continuous production, and is also known as the line production. The chapter explains the basic principle of the bottleneck analysis. The material requirements planning (MRP-I) schedule is a part of the chain. The underlying components for a product should be available when the order to manufacture the product is released. The chapter explores the minimal data requirements for input for an MRP-I calculation, basic principle of the bottleneck analysis, and functions of Enterprise Resources Planning (ERP) system. ERP packages are increasingly being used to manage the related flow of goods and data, along the chain from suppliers to customers. The chapter also describes the importance of a good implementation of ERP for studying production logistics.
