ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the relevant concepts of automated store ordering, continuous replenishment, cross docking, synchronised production, reliable operations, integrated suppliers, postponed manufacturing, vendor-managed inventories and product. The physical delivery of products from suppliers to producers and from producers to retailers is, of course, an important aspect of the supply chain. Themes central to the physical distribution process are automated store ordering, continuous replenishment and cross docking. Efficient Replenishment is one of the important strategies on the supply side of efficient consumer response, which targets production and logistical processes. Speed, flexibility and reliability in relation to stock reduction are the key terms around which efficient replenishment revolves, with information and communication technology acting as the catalyst. Vendor-managed inventories is a strategy whereby the supplier is made responsible for the management of the customers’ stocks and, as a consequence, is able to decide what products are delivered to the customer at what moment.
