ABSTRACT
This chapter introduces readers to comparative politics, area studies, and comparative research and discusses key ideas in the study of democracy, including pluralism, polyarchy, the third wave, and populism. It also covers alternative conceptions of democracy—popular and Marxist—that are present in debates about democracy in both the field of Latin American studies and the region itself.
