ABSTRACT

M. Belbin developed a model in which success and failure factors are established in relation to the personalities of the people who have to work in a team. With this model – which comprises nine team roles – insight is obtained into the team dynamics and mutual interplay among team members. Every team member exhibits certain behaviour. The team roles constitute the recognition that every team member has strong and less strong sides in his/her own role. People that form a team are complementary to each other. Teams that are in balance as far as the personality characteristics necessary to carry out the project successfully are concerned. The management thereby has an instrument to carry out projects with less supervision and risk. The starting point of the model is that the staffs have sufficient expertise, training and experience with regard to the subject of the project.
