ABSTRACT

During the integration process, staff strive to ensure that the new employee adopts as many as possible of the values existing within the organisation. The organisation’s most important goal in respect of integration is to ensure that the employee functions properly. This chapter explores the values within an organisation and the socialisation of new employees. It discusses motivation through reward, attractive work and challenging goals. Motivation by financial reward links the performance of employees and their salary or bonuses: the so-called pay-for-performance system. If pay-for-performance is primarily a work-extrinsic motivation, the provision of attractive work is work-intrinsic. A great deal of research has been done into the effects of the different forms of motivation on the performance of employees. The effect of providing attractive work can be explored by establishing to what extent employees’ work matches the characteristics of the Job Characteristics Model and how it connects with the motivation, work satisfaction and performance of these employees.
