ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on discussing the leadership of operational activities within the organisation. Leadership consists of a continuous process of planning, guiding, checking and adjusting. A person with a management position in an organisation is assigned certain means of power, which can be used to influence subordinates. The degree of power inequality, and consequently the obedience shown by a subordinate to a higher-ranking individual, is not the same in every culture. The confrontational use of power is avoided because it can strengthen the opposition of ideas and wishes and lead to a deterioration in relationships. The sources of power that are attached to positions by an organisation are intended to be used in the general interest, to match the behaviour and contributions of employees to each other and to gear them to the organisational goals. For managers and employees who are adept at the political use of power, power games will have no negative consequences.
