ABSTRACT

This chapter describes techniques for planning and scheduling. Planning of activities is essential to efficient work. Whatever the project, it must be well planned, and these plans must be properly scheduled. Scheduling can be a complicated and time-consuming business and this no doubt explains why people have devised ways and means to simplify the task. On a Gantt chart, activities are indicated by strips or bars. One can see at a glance in what order activities have to take place and the duration of each activity. A Gantt chart can be drawn by hand. A network diagram is a tool for scheduling complicated projects involving multiple activities. The project does need to have a clear starting point and a clear finishing point. A computer can be used for the scheduling process. Spreadsheet programs may be used or a designed planning software for making Gantt charts. A completed Work Breakdown Structure can be entered into a planning program on the computer.
