ABSTRACT

Training and staff development are an important aspect of the work of a hospitality unit manager. All training must start with a clear understanding of the aims and objectives of what the unit manager expects to achieve from the training activity. The benefits of training include improved productivity; increased sales, and reductions in labour turnover. A declared policy about the aims and objectives of training is essential. In fact, many large branded hospitality retail organisations have written policy statements that are included in staff handbooks. Some reliable training tips are: learning and training are likely to be most effective when the trainee wants to learn and can see the benefit of the training; and people will learn most effectively when they are told what they are going to learn. Effective training will depend on the trainees wanting to learn and being attentive and responsive to the trainer.
