ABSTRACT

There is a sneaky kind of eating disorder that involves being obsessed with “wellness” that is becoming more recognized in recent years. This eating disorder is called orthorexia. In this chapter, the authors break down what orthorexia is and explain how it has developed from our collective unhealthy obsession with “clean eating.” Orthorexia is an unhealthy obsession with so-called “healthy eating.” Symptoms can include a fixation on eating so-called “healthy foods,” rigid food rules, and guilt when those rules are broken, speaking about purity and spirituality in conjunction with food, and social withdrawl. The authors share tips on how to tell if you are struggling with orthorexia and explain different ways to address it.
