ABSTRACT

The rectangular waistband is the most traditional style waistband as long as the waistline is at the natural waist and the waistband does not exceed 1¼” in width. It is cut with an underlap, and can have a self-facing that is cut in one with the waistband. The common width for a finished waistband is 1¼”, but should not exceed 2”. If the waistband exceeds 2”, then it would need to be shaped to accommodate the curving of the figure. To create the Rectangular Waistband, a designer needs the waist measurement of the garment they are applying the waistband to + 1½” underlap. When creating the pattern for a self-faced rectangular waistband, a designer needs to double the finished waistband width measurement as indicated in the diagram. The Shaped or Contoured Waistband is used on a skirt or pant with a lowered waistline or if the waistband exceeds 2” in width.
